Thursday, 4 June 2026 — EOD read. A split close: the S&P notched a fresh marginal high while the Nasdaq gave a little back, and the desk-flow tape spent the afternoon telling two stories at once.

What happened

SPY closed at 757.09, up +0.38% from yesterday’s 754.24, printing an intraday high of 758.31 before settling. QQQ went the other way, finishing at 740.61, down -0.48% from 744.21 — a clean divergence we don’t see every day. VIX bled down to 15.40 from 16.06, a sign the tape isn’t paying up for protection at the index level. Market-wide options ran call-heavy, with a 0.68 put/call ratio across roughly 40.8M calls against 27.6M puts.

Under the hood the single-name picture was sharper than the index reads. We flagged NVDA pressing higher into the bell — it closed +1.82% at 218.66 with net premium swinging to roughly +$118M on the day, and the 220-strike near-dated calls saw enormous volume. Against that, the clearest defensive tell sat in small-caps: our read of the IWM tape was a stack of June and July put buys at the 276–278 strikes, mostly lifted on the ask. So the same session that bought the megacap was quietly hedging the Russell.

Why it matters

When the S&P and Nasdaq split like this, leadership narrows — and today it narrowed toward a handful of AI and semi names rather than the broad index. Our read is that this is still a bull tape (the regime classifier holds Bull · early), but it’s a tape leaning on fewer shoulders. The VIX drop tells you nobody’s panicking; the IWM put stack tells you the smart hedges are going on underneath the calm, where they’re cheap.

The dark-pool tape backed the institutional-repositioning theme. The desk-flow tape said the day’s two largest off-exchange blocks were CRM (~$188M at 188.75) and TSLA (~$187M at 418.45), with another big CRWV print (~$153M) crossing below the NBBO. Those are the kinds of size that get worked when funds are rotating, not chasing.

What to watch into Friday’s session

  • SPY: 758.31 is the line to clear (today’s high); 751.47 is the first support shelf if the bid fades.
  • QQQ: the laggard — 744.21 (yesterday’s close) is now overhead resistance, and 732.62 (today’s low) is the level bulls have to defend.
  • VIX: 15.40 and sliding; sub-16 keeps the dip-buyers in control, a pop back above 16 changes the tone fast.
  • NVDA: 218.66 close — watch the 220 round number, where call open interest keeps stacking.
  • IWM: 291.98 — small-caps are lagging and the 276–278 put wall marks where hedgers see real risk.
  • Breadth: the SPY-green / QQQ-red split is the tell of the week so far; watch which way Friday resolves it.

The set-up

Net-net, this is a bull tape running on narrow leadership. The index calm and the falling VIX say the trend is intact, but the small-cap put stack and the rotational dark-pool blocks say the desks aren’t all-in — they’re leaning on the megacaps and paying for downside insurance where it’s cheap. Our base case into Friday is constructive but selective: let NVDA and the semis carry it, respect the QQQ underperformance until it’s resolved, and treat the IWM hedges as the market’s honest opinion of its own risk.
